The The Open Network (TON) ecosystem is set to undergo a branding change for its native token. Telegram founder Pavel Durov announced that the token currently known as TON will be renamed Gram within the next few weeks. However, the blockchain network itself will continue operating under the name The Open Network (TON), with no technical changes to the protocol or infrastructure.
The rebranding process is expected to be completed within approximately three weeks. During the transition period, crypto wallets, blockchain infrastructure providers, exchanges, and applications across the TON ecosystem will gradually update the token’s display name from TON to Gram.
According to Durov’s announcement, the change is strictly related to the branding of the network’s native token. The Open Network blockchain will retain its existing name and continue operating without any modifications to its protocol, infrastructure, or functionality.
As a result, users will not need to migrate assets, swap tokens, or take any technical action. Token balances, utility, and functionality will remain exactly the same. The only change will be the token’s name and branding across supported platforms.
The update will be rolled out gradually by ecosystem participants, including wallets, blockchain explorers, DeFi services, and infrastructure providers that support the TON network.
The name Gram has deep historical ties to the blockchain project originally developed by Telegram. Before The Open Network became an independent project, Telegram was developing the Telegram Open Network, whose native token was called Gram.
However, the project faced legal challenges from U.S. regulators in 2020, leading Telegram to discontinue its direct involvement in the network's development. The developer community subsequently continued the project independently and rebranded it as The Open Network (TON).
The return of the Gram name is widely viewed as an effort to reconnect the current ecosystem with its original identity and history, which remains familiar to many cryptocurrency enthusiasts.
Although detailed reasoning behind the decision has not yet been publicly disclosed, the rebranding reflects an effort to strengthen the token’s positioning as the TON ecosystem continues to expand.
At this stage, there is no indication that the name change will affect the token’s utility, tokenomics, or network mechanics. The token, once renamed Gram, will continue to be used for transaction fees, staking, and various activities throughout the TON ecosystem.
For users, the most noticeable impact will likely be the updated asset name displayed in wallets, cryptocurrency exchanges, and applications connected to the network. During the transition period, some platforms may display both TON and Gram to help users identify the asset.
Industry observers note that branding changes of this nature are typically intended to improve project identity and consistency without altering the underlying technology. As such, market attention is expected to remain focused on network adoption, Telegram user growth, and the continued expansion of TON-based applications.
TON’s decision to rename its native token to Gram marks a significant branding milestone for a blockchain ecosystem with strong historical ties to Telegram. While the token’s name is changing, The Open Network will continue operating as usual, with no technical changes or asset migrations required.
Over the coming weeks, users can expect to see the Gram name appear across wallets, exchanges, and ecosystem services. The move also serves as a reminder of the project’s origins as Telegram Open Network before evolving into one of the largest blockchain ecosystems connected to Telegram today.
