MetaMask, the world’s most popular Ethereum wallet, is finally confirmed to launch its long-awaited native token: MASK. The news came directly from Ethereum co-founder and Consensys CEO, Joseph Lubin, in his interview on The Crypto Beat podcast by The Block.
Lubin emphasized that the token will be launched soon:
“The MASK token is coming soon, maybe sooner than you think,” said Lubin.
According to him, the launch of MASK is closely tied to the push for progressive decentralization within the Ethereum ecosystem. Consensys, the company behind MetaMask, Infura, and Linea, has long stressed that decentralization must remain at the core of its ecosystem.
From Rumor to Real Confirmation
Since 2021, rumors about MetaMask’s native token have circulated widely. At the time, MetaMask engineer Erik Marks proposed the idea of community ownership through a token launch. However, by 2023, the issue triggered major FOMO. Many users were willing to pay high transaction fees to boost activity on MetaMask in hopes of receiving an airdrop. Unfortunately, it all ended up as just speculation.
Now, Lubin’s statement strongly signals that MASK’s launch is truly concrete. In fact, this aligns with remarks from MetaMask co-founder Dan Finlay in May 2025, who said that if a token were to launch, the announcement would be made directly inside the wallet to prevent phishing.
Extra Momentum: The Arrival of mUSD
It’s not just about MASK, MetaMask also recently launched the mUSD stablecoin in September 2025. This move is seen as an initial step for MetaMask to expand its token ecosystem. The combination of a stablecoin and a native token opens new opportunities, ranging from user incentives to community governance.
What Does This Mean for Users?
If MASK is indeed released, it is very likely that active MetaMask users will have a chance to receive incentives or an airdrop. However, it is important to remember:
Conclusion
The launch of the MASK token could become a historic moment for MetaMask and the Ethereum community. With full support from Joseph Lubin and a strategic step through the mUSD stablecoin, a major opportunity is opening up for MetaMask to further strengthen its position in the Web3 world.
Will MASK bring a massive airdrop for loyal MetaMask users? That remains a question mark. But one thing is clear: this news is further heating up the competition among infrastructure tokens in the crypto space.
